WELLNESS EXAMS
The key to a healthy pet is early detection and prevention of disease. Wellness exams are the most important preventive health procedure and diagnostic aid available for the pet. These visits are just as important to our pets as annual exams are for us. Early detection can benefit the patient's overall health. Often they allow us to treat and cure a disease or problem before it is too late.
Most dogs and cats reach adulthood by the age of two. By age four, some pets are entering middle age. Most dogs, particularly larger breeds, are entering their senior years by the age of seven.
Did you know that because dogs and cats age an average of seven times faster than people, health changes can occur in a short period of time? In animals, as well as in humans, the risks of cancer, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, heart disease, metabolic problems and other serious conditions all increase with age.
Pet wellness exams include screenings for a variety of potential diseases, including heartworm and intestinal parasites. These screenings are usually accompanied by individualized risk assessment of your pet's environment - where you live, emerging disease risks in your community, your pet's interaction with other pets and wildlife, travel plans, and other lifestyle considerations.
A general blood panel is an additional tool available to evaluate the function of the organs and systems mentioned above. It evaluates the liver, kidneys, immune system, hematologic (red and white blood cells) system, some hormonal systems, as well as the electrolyte balance. Blood work is a very important part of your pet's wellness life program.

Bringing your pet to see their veterinarian once a year is the same as seeing your own doctor or dentist once every seven years. This is the reason we recommend that pets have a wellness exam every six months. It allows us the opportunity to detect, treat or, ideally, prevent problems before they become life-threatening.
